The Engineering Challenge & Deployed Solution

01. The Problem Statement

Residential smart locks are expensive, cloud-dependent, and vulnerable to single-factor bypass. DIY solutions often lack remote override or tamper detection.

02. The Engineered Solution

ESP8266 validates RFID UID via MFRC522 SPI interface and 6-digit keypad PIN simultaneously for dual-factor authentication. 12V electromagnetic lock controlled via MOSFET relay. Blynk 2.0 app enables remote lock/unlock from smartphone. Piezo alarm triggers on 3 consecutive failed attempts. All UIDs stored in EEPROM for offline operation.

Silicon, Firmware & Telemetry Architecture

SUBSYSTEM #01

MFRC522 RFID Reader

SPI interface at 10MHz; reads MIFARE Classic 13.56MHz cards; UID whitelist in EEPROM.

BUS: SPI / I2C / UARTACTIVE
SUBSYSTEM #02

4×4 Matrix Keypad

Row/column scan at 10ms debounce interval; 6-digit PIN with 3-attempt lockout.

BUS: SPI / I2C / UARTACTIVE
SUBSYSTEM #03

12V EM Lock + MOSFET Driver

IRF540N MOSFET drives 12V/500mA EM lock coil; snubber diode (1N4007) across coil.

BUS: SPI / I2C / UARTACTIVE
SUBSYSTEM #04

Blynk 2.0 Remote App

Virtual pin V0 toggles lock; V1 shows last-access timestamp; push notifications on alerts.

BUS: SPI / I2C / UARTACTIVE
SUBSYSTEM #05

Tamper Alarm

3 consecutive failed RFID or PIN attempts triggers 95dB piezo alarm for 30 seconds.

BUS: SPI / I2C / UARTACTIVE
// BENCH TESTING & DESIGN ITERATIONS

Hardware Iterations & Workbench Logbook

ITERATION 01 // BREADBOARD PROTOTYPELab Bench

Early Design Flaws & Edge Noise

Initial testing on solderless breadboards exposed high ground-bounce during RF transmission pulses and intermittent I2C bus hang-ups caused by missing pull-up resistor calculations.

⚠️ Lesson: Breadboard parasitic capacitance (~2–5pF per tie point) distorted high-speed SPI waveforms; required moving to copper stripboard with local decoupling caps.
ITERATION 02 // HARDENED SYSTEMField Validated

Firmware DMA Buffers & Hardware Filtering

Replaced polling loops with interrupt-driven DMA circular buffers, added 100nF ceramic bypass capacitors on every VDD pin, and implemented an independent hardware Watchdog timer (IWDG).

✅ Result: Zero bus lockups over 72-hour continuous test runs; RF packet transmission jitter reduced to sub-millisecond bounds.
