The Engineering Challenge & Deployed Solution

01. The Problem Statement

Replicating the passive 6-wheel rocker-bogie suspension of Chandrayaan-3 Pragyan while maintaining stable PID heading on uneven terrain without active suspension actuators.

02. The Engineered Solution

Custom laser-cut aluminium rocker-bogie chassis with 6 independent DC gear motors driven by dual L298N H-bridges. Arduino Mega 2560 runs a heading-hold PID loop reading MPU-6050 gyro data at 400Hz. Obstacle avoidance via HC-SR04 ultrasonics on a servo-swept mount. Live telemetry (speed, heading, battery) transmitted at 433MHz to base station via HC-12 RF module.

// MODULAR SUBSYSTEM BREAKDOWN

Silicon, Firmware & Telemetry Architecture

SUBSYSTEM #01

Rocker-Bogie Suspension

6-wheel passive rocker-bogie with differential pivots; climbs obstacles up to 1.5x wheel diameter.

BUS: SPI / I2C / UARTACTIVE
SUBSYSTEM #02

PID Heading Controller

MPU-6050 IMU at 400Hz DMP output feeds PID loop (Kp=2.1, Ki=0.05, Kd=0.8) for straight-line stability.

BUS: SPI / I2C / UARTACTIVE
SUBSYSTEM #03

Dual L298N H-Bridge

Two L298N boards driving 3 motors each; PWM from Timer1/Timer2 on Mega 2560 at 20kHz.

BUS: SPI / I2C / UARTACTIVE
SUBSYSTEM #04

Ultrasonic Obstacle Avoidance

HC-SR04 on SG90 servo sweeps ±75° scanning 7 zones every 200ms; triggers evasive manoeuvre < 40cm.

BUS: SPI / I2C / UARTACTIVE
SUBSYSTEM #05

HC-12 RF Telemetry

433MHz long-range RF link sends JSON telemetry packets every 500ms; base station Python script logs CSV.

BUS: SPI / I2C / UARTACTIVE
// BENCH TESTING & DESIGN ITERATIONS

Hardware Iterations & Workbench Logbook

ITERATION 01 // BREADBOARD PROTOTYPELab Bench

Early Design Flaws & Edge Noise

Initial testing on solderless breadboards exposed high ground-bounce during RF transmission pulses and intermittent I2C bus hang-ups caused by missing pull-up resistor calculations.

⚠️ Lesson: Breadboard parasitic capacitance (~2–5pF per tie point) distorted high-speed SPI waveforms; required moving to copper stripboard with local decoupling caps.
ITERATION 02 // HARDENED SYSTEMField Validated

Firmware DMA Buffers & Hardware Filtering

Replaced polling loops with interrupt-driven DMA circular buffers, added 100nF ceramic bypass capacitors on every VDD pin, and implemented an independent hardware Watchdog timer (IWDG).

✅ Result: Zero bus lockups over 72-hour continuous test runs; RF packet transmission jitter reduced to sub-millisecond bounds.
